Jarak ke permukaan air diukur berdasarkan waktu rambat laser infra merah mulai dari pantulan hingga penerimaan laser infra merah yang disinari ke permukaan. Ketinggian air dihitung dengan mengurangkan jarak ini dari ketinggian posisi pemasangan sensor. Dibandingkan dengan model kami sebelumnya, efek hujan dan kabut dikurangi dengan memindai laser inframerah di atas permukaan air untuk menangkapnya sebagai permukaan.
